ll ADVENTURES ll
White water rafting
The Arkansas is known for its awesome rafting. Here in Cañon City, you can take the Arkansas through Big Horn Sheep Canyon and the Royal Gorge - yes, under the bridge! We take our class of students rafting every year when they come to the Abbey, it is definitely an amazing experience! The group we go down the river with is called Journey Quest and they are an awesome Christian raft company. We have had many Abbey students work at Journey Quest after their year at the Abbey!
OIl Well Flats - Hiking and biking
There are tons of trails in Cañon City. And you don’t have to go far to find some of all different levels. Twelve miles of single-track trails invite trail users to Oil Well Flats with its spectacular views of the valley below and the Sangre De Cristo Mountain range in the distance. It’s the perfect place to unwind after classes!
Rock climbing
Did you know Cañon City has some of the best rock climbing in the United States? Many of the gorgeous places to climb are hidden gems and are not overly crowded. Within a short scenic drive from downtown one can reach the limestone cliffs along Shelf Road, the granite domes along Oak Creek Grade, or the bouldering along Newlin Creek. Depending on elevation and sun exposure one can climb year round in Fremont County.
Skiing and Snowboarding
Do you love snow sports? Cañon City is known as the gateway to the mountains and is only an hour and a half to the nearest Ski Resort called Monarch Mountain. The resort is situated on Monarch Pass at the continental divide. It has 54 trails, two terrain parks, and an extreme terrain area called Mirkwood.
